It has been reported that a very violent explosion occurred during the preparation of o toluamide as described in this series.¹ The temperature of the reaction mixture was allowed to exceed 50°, and the rapidly evolved mixture of oxygen and alcohol vapor was ignited accidentally. It is recommended that this preparation be performed only at a safe distance from open flames, and behind a substantial safety shield. Since approximately 20 1. of oxygen may be evolved within a relatively short period, it is important to have efficient stirring and cooling (40-50°), and to provide adequate venting for the flask.
